Blogmas Day 10 - How To Style: Velvets

Hey cupcakes! Velvets are a huge trend during the winter, so I wanted to share a lookbook with you all today! :)

Outfit #1 - This outfit is so stunning! Pair a velvet skirt with a black turtle neck and some boots for a gorgeous (and still festive) look.

Outfit #2 - Rock a velvet dress! Velvet dresses are so perfect for a festive holiday party but can totally be worn on any day. To make the velvet aspects pop, pair your dress with some neutrals. :)

Outfit #3 - This is personally my favorite; a velvet jacket! Rock a graphic tee with jeans, converse, and your velvet jacket for an awesome pop of holiday flare!

Blogmas Day 9 - Reciple: Classic Gingerbread

Hey cupcakes! Who can survive the holiday season without some gingerbread cookies? I know I can't, so I wanted to share my favorite gingerbread cookie recipe with you all today! :)

Image result for gingerbread men

What You Need
-2 sticks of butter
-1 cup sugar
-1 egg
-1 cup molasses (the darker the molasses the more rich the flavor will be!)
-2 tbsp white vinegar
-5 cups flour
-1 1/2 tsp baking soda
-1/2 tsp salt
-2 tsp ground ginger
-1 tsp cinnamon
-1 tsp ground cloves

What To Do
1. Cream butter, then add sugar in small portions. Beat until combined and fluffly (around 3 minutes).
2. Beat in eggs, molasses, and vinegar.
3. Mix all dry ingredients together (can sift them if you'd like). Blend dry ingredients into wet ones.
4. Divide dough in half, wrap each piece in plastic wrap, and put in refridge for at least 30 minutes (but no more than 1.5 hours).
5. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll out the dough on a floured surface until it is about .5" thick.
6. Cut into desired shapes! :)
7. Place cookies onto a parchment paper covered tray. Bake for 9-11 minutes.
8. Let cookies cool on the pan for about 3 minutes, and then move to a wire rack to finish cooling.
9. After they are cool, decorate with your favorite icing (or eat them as they are!).

Blogmas Day 8 - My Fav "Ugly" Holiday Sweaters!

Hey cupcakes! One of my favorite parts of the wintertime is getting to wear/buy "ugly" holiday sweaters! I feel like they become more and more trendy each year, and I always love to see what new designs stores will create. I compiled some of my favorite sweaters from this season in this post, so make sure you snag one before the holiday season is over!

Reptar Sweater ($32.90 at Forever 21)

0

I know this is a men's sweater, but I might buy it anyway. :P It is super cute and really brings me back to the 90s, so I think it would be the perfect sweater for the holidays!

Birthday Boy Sweater ($29.99 at Rue21)

This is hilarious... And very affordable! Rue21 also has some pretty simple ones (like penguins, reindeer, etc.) if you are looking for a more "tame" one. :P

Holiday Sweater ($29.99 from H&M)

I think this is a gorgeous (and subtle) "ugly" Christmas sweater! I love the polka dots, and the design definitely puts me in the holiday spirit for sure!

Snowman Sweater Dress ($32.99 from Target)

THESE ARE SO CUTE! I saw them in Target one day and flipped out! There are also three other cute designs too (think cookie chefs and a fireplace with stocking!). This would be perfect for an "ugly" Christmas sweater party :D

Reindeer Sweater ($30-40 from Amazon)

Amazon has SO many "ugly" sweaters! If you aren't sure where to look, I would definitely recommend to check out there. This one is so adorable, and there were a bunch of other reindeer designs as well.

What is the best "ugly" holiday sweater you have seen this season? Comment below and don't forget to follow The Chic Cupcake to never miss a post during Blogmas! :D

Blogmas Day 7 - Gift Giving Guide: For Mom

Hey cupcakes! Today is the second post for my mini Gift Giving Guide series! :) If you want to check out the first post of this series for some awesome DIY presents, read it here! Today I wanted to focus on presents "for your mom". Sometimes I find it hard to think of a special gift for my mother, so I wanted to share my ideas with you all in case you are also stuck! :)

1. Sentimental photos - If your mom loves sentimental gifts, get her some sort of photo themed gift. This could be an album of your favorite family pics, or a framed family portrait for her house. If you have the budget, an electronic photo frame is always a winner!

2. Spa Day Kit - Moms do a lot for all of us, so treat her to a spa day! This can be a voucher for an actual spa or you can get a basket together of her favorite beauty products (I'm talking bubble bath, cozy socks, nail polish, etc.).

Image result for spa day kit

3. Slippers - My mom loves slippers, so I can never go wrong with buying her another pair for around the house! :P

4. Custom Mug and Coasters - If you mom is a coffee/tea/warm beverage drinker, making your own custom mug is such a cute gift! In addition, try buying some cute coasters for around the house and/or some hot cocoa mix, tea bags, coffee, etc.!

Image result for custom mug

5. Take her on a shopping spree! - I know my mom never has time to shop for herself, so take her for a trip to the mall and purchase her anything from one article of clothing to an entire outfit! :) Perfect mother-child bonding as well!

6. Personalized jewelry - I love buying things off Etsy for my mom; you can always find such cute things! There are so many customizable necklaces, rings, bracelets, etc., so pick something out you know she will like!

Blogmas Day 5 - Anxiety Journey Part 2!

Hey cupcakes! Last month I made a post talking about my goals for dealing with my anxiety (read that post here). I wanted to quickly write an update for each of these goals, to keep you all informed and raise awareness for those of you who may also struggle with anxiety. :)

1. Learning deep breathing/meditation - In all honestly, I haven't done much with this goal so far. My overthinking before bed is still a problem, but I haven't gotten around to it. Now that I am writing this, I definitely want to start learning for my January update!

2. Finding the right smells - This has been going well! I have found two things that really make me feel relaxed in my dorm room: lemon essential oil (from Maple Holistics) I talked about in my post last month and the Almond candle from Bath and Body Works. These scents are soothing to me, and I hope to find more throughout this journey!

Image result for almond candle bath and body works

3. Finding an artistic way to fight it - While I haven't been doing any drawing or painting, I have been working in my bullet journal often, and this has helped a bit. I also got a fidget bracelet/spinner thing from a free stress event I went to, and it is pretty awesome! I totally recommend getting one!

Image result for fidget toys
4. Keeping you all updated - I am writing this post, so I feel like I am completing this goal! ;) Overall, my anxiety hasn't been too bad, but finals are coming up... Which means it will be getting worse. Keep an eye out for my update next month!

Blogmas Day 3: How To Style - Jade Green

Hey cupcakes! One of my favorite colors to style in winter is emerald/jade green. This color just reminds me of the holiday, and I think it looks great with my brown hair! :P Today I made a lookbook for you all, so let's get started!

Outfit 1 - This is my fav way to style emerald green... I have sweaters and cardigans that are emerald, so I love to pair it with some jeans or leggings and knee high boots! It looks super cute and is really easy to pull off.

Outfit 2 - If you want to add jade green as your pop of color, I suggest finding a purse that is green! Wear this bag with a basic outfit (jeans, neutral sweater or top, black booties) and an emerald necklace and you are all set to go!

Outfit 3 - Green dresses are perfect to wear for any holiday party, date night, or office event in December. This dress is super adorable, so wear your favorite cuddly cardigan and some black pumps; so chic!

Blogmas Day 2: Gift Giving Guide - DIY Presents

Hey cupcakes! Throughout Blogmas I will be doing posts for a "Gift Giving Guide" mini-series, so I thought I would kick off with the first post today! Especially for my younger followers (who may or may have a large budget to buy Christmas presents), I wanted to share my favorite DIYs that are great gifts... And easy to make too!

1. Handmade cards - Cards are such a great way to spread holiday cheer, and they are actually really easy (and fun) to make by hand. They don't have to be super fancy, but make sure you personalize them to make someone's holiday extra special. :)

2. Hot Chocolate Jars - Hot cocoa is a must in the winter, so ready-made cocoa jars are a great gift! Add homemade cocoa powder (or use some from the store), marshmallows, and any other toppings your family and friends would like!

Image result for snowman hot chocolate jar

3. Tie blankets - While this isn't totally a DIY present, it is affordable and a great gift! My friend gave me a tie blanket in middle school, and it is still on my bed :) It only takes maximum an hour to finish one of these blankets, so I would definitely recommend!

Image result for tie blanket

4. Ornament - When I was younger, making ornaments was super fun for me. You can use an ornament base you get from the store, or you can make it totally from scratch. The options are endless, and the person who receives it will always remember you when they look at their tree.

Image result for diy ornament

5. Cookies/candy - If you like baking, make some baked goods as your presents! People always love a good snack during the holidays ;)

6. Bath products - I had a phase where I would make bath bombs for people as gifts, so if you know someone who loves bath products, try your hand in making some (or soap or sugar scrubs etc.)!

Blogmas Day 1: My Winter Bucketlist!

Hey cupcakes! TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF BLOGMAS! :D Are you excited (cuz I'm excited)?! While it hasn't really snowed much on my campus, I have a lot of really fun things planned to do this winter. I thought I would share my winter bucketlist with you all to start this Blogmas off right - enjoy!

1. Build a snow-family

Image result for snow family

Snowmen are a tradition in my family, so I totally want to build a whole bunch of snow-people this winter. Hopefully there is a lot of packing snow! :)

2. Ice skate!
I wanted to ice skate last winter, but I never had time to do it. I have always loved ice skating, so it is definitely a must this year!

3. Learn to make a new holdiay cookie

Image result for holiday cookies

I feel like every family has traditional cookies they make in the holiday season (my family makes Italian sugar cookies every year), but I want to experiment in the kitchen this winter and learn how to make a new cookie. :) Any suggestions?

4. Take a picture on Santa's lap (or maybe just with him as that could be awkward)
Fun fact: I was scared of Santa as a child. Lol - I would literally write him letters to not come in my room on Christmas Eve, and my mom could NEVER get me to sit on his lap. I want to finally face my fear and take a picture with Santa this year because I feel like it would be a hilarious joke :P

5. Go caroling

Image result for caroling

I used to go caroling with my friends as a child, so I totally want to do this again! It is such a fun holiday thing to do, and it definitely spreads holiday cheer. :D

6. Have a holiday movie marathon
My family likes to watch a lot of holiday movies, so I think it would be so fun to put on a onesie and watch movies all night with some hot cocoa and cookies.

7. Drive around and look at all the Christmas lights

Image result for christmas lights

One of my favorite things about traveling is seeing all the lights of a city at night, so I definitely need to drive around my city and campus to see all of the decorations. It always puts me in the spirit!

8. Build a gingerbread house
Two years ago my boyfriend told me he had never built a gingerbread house before, so we had built one together for the past two holidays. I want to build one again this year! :)

Review: Pro-Wax100 and Hard Wax

Hey cupcakes! If you have been reading The Chic Cupcake for awhile now (if you haven't been, hit that subscribe button please!), you know that I have been experimenting with different wax strips this year. I have done two reviews so far: Sally Hansen Ouch-Relief and Nair Wax Ready-Strips. I have always wanted to try hard wax for hair removal, so I decided to purchase the Pro-Wax 100 a month ago! :D

Purchase it HERE
While experimenting with different hair removal methods, I was always intrigued by videos of people using hard wax. For only $30, I figured I couldn't really go wrong (and it came with 4 different types of wax too!).

THIS THING IS AMAZING - I will never go back to wax strips!!! While the wax strips will do the job, this does the job 100% better. :) The Pro-Wax100 itself is larger than I expected, but it melts the wax very quickly and keeps it hot as you are waxing. While using hard wax takes more practice to get right, I was able to "master" the method in only two uses (watching YouTube videos for help is a great tool if you can't seem to get it right).

Because the wax attaches only to the hairs (and not your skin), it rips out everything (like EVERYTHING). This makes it a bit more painful than the wax strips, but the hair-less effect lasts wayyyy longer. I waxed the area between my legs and hairs only started to grow back about one and half weeks later (and it was only a few of them that were less prickly/thick). But, if you don't think you will be able to make it through the pain, I wouldn't suggest you use hard wax (as you can't change your mind after the wax hardens).

Related image

The wax works basically anywhere (I've used it on the bikini line, face, and eyebrows), which makes it super versatile. Plus, you aren't limited to the wax size of a wax strip - you can make the patches of wax as big or small as needed. I would suggest starting small as you master the technique, and then move to bigger areas.

Overall, this machine definitely works, and I am super excited to continue hard waxing! :D If you are interested in more posts about how I use hard wax, tips and tricks for using hard wax, etc., please let me know in the comments!

Would you try hard wax? Comment below and don't forget to follow The Chic Cupcake! :)

My 5 Beauty Essentials to Survive the Cold Weather

Hey cupcakes! With the cold comes other fun things: dry hands, chapped lips, and dead hair. In order to be prepared to battle these things, you must have the right beauty supplies! Today I wanted to make a list of my life savers in the cold weather, so I hope you can use these things to make the weather a bit more bearable! Let's get started :D

1. Eucerin Lotion - I have sensitive skin that gets super dry in the cold, so this lotion is amazing! I use it on my body and my face (and it never irriates or breaks out my skin) every single day, so I would recommend you try it out!

Image result for eucerin

2. Vaseline - There are so many uses for Vaseline, but in the winter it works great to keep your eyelashes nice and nourished. Just wipe some Vaseline on your eyelashes before bed, and it will strengthen the hair as you sleep.

Image result for vaseline

3. Lip Balm - I try to avoid lipstick, lip gloss, and other lip products when it is cold outside because your lips really need to stay moisturized! Finding a lip balm that works for you is essential, so keep trying different brands until you find the best one :) I am currently loving Burt's Bees Peppermint.

Image result for burt's bees peppermint lip balm

4. Argan Oil - My hair gets so dry in the winter, so I have been using Argan Oil to keep it healthy. I did a review on argan oil here, but you can try out different essential oils to find which one works best for you!

Image result for argan oil

5. Loofah - Loofahs are so important in the winter to make sure you get rid of any dead skin on your body. Plus, they are super cheap! :)

What I'm Thankful For :)

Hey cupcakes! I hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving yesterday!!!! :D

Image result for thanksgiving gif

Because it is the day after Thanksgiving, I thought I would share with you all what I am thankful for.

1. My family, boyfriend, roommate, and friends - I feel like everyone is thankful for the people we love, so I had to say this ;) These people are my support network, and I can go to them when anything happens in my life (good or bad). My life would truly not be the same without these people, so I am thankful each and every day that they are in my life.

2. My followers - That's you! I have loved blogging here on The Chic Cupcake, and I never thought in a million years I would have this many followers (and continue to get followers!). It blows my mind that people actually want to read what I have to write about, and I am so excited to post every day next month for Blogmas (make sure to follow me if you haven't because I have a lot of cool stuff planned!!).

3. Stress - As many of you know, my anxiety has been pretty bad this semester. You might think I'm crazy for being thankful for the very thing that has caused me many bad days, but I am glad my anxiety has been bad because it has forced me to actually deal with it (instead of just brushing it aside per usual). I feel like I will be able overcome this, and it should help me in the long run!

4. School - It is crazy to think that in one semester I will be a senior in college! College has been going by so fast, but I have been learning so much. I am so lucky and thankful I have the opportunity to educate myself and learn as much as I can.

5. My future - Because of school I was able to secure a really awesome internship this summer, which should lead into a full time position after I graduate. It is amazing to me that my life after college is actually almost set in stone, and I am so thankful I have the opportunity to grow my career directly after I graduate. :)

What are you thankful for? Comment down below, so we can create a long list of things that we are thankful for! :) Don't forget to also follow The Chic Cupcake!

My Tips and Tricks for Holiday Shopping!

Hey cupcakes! Black Friday is around the corner, which means it is time to start holiday shopping for your family and friends. :) In preparation, I thought I would share with you all my tips and tricks for acing your holiday shopping!

1. Start early! - Don't be that person who has to go out the week before Christmas to finish up your shopping. Not only will everything already be picked over, but you will have to deal with a whole crowd of people. The earlier you start, the better!

2. Decide if Black Friday is worth it - Black Friday is definitely for the intense holiday shopper, so if you don't want to go out shopping you might find it easier to just shop on Cyber Monday (or even Black Friday online sales).

Image result for black friday

3. Set a budget before you go - It makes gift shopping way easier if you have a budget set before you hit the store! Plus, it allows you to actively know how much the holidays are going to set you back before you even spend the money... Just make sure to say in the budget!

4. Brainstorm - Again, before you even hit a store, brainstorm what you want to get everyone!!! I like to do this in the Notes app of my phone, and it makes you think about what the person likes before you have to aimlessly walk around the store. I find that this allows me to get more thoughtful gifts, so I would totally recommend.

Image result for brainstorming

5. Make your cards - Cards are so expensive, and while there are alternatives like Paperless Post (see my post on this company here!), I LOVE to make cards for people myself. I have always been crafty and making my own cards allows me to add inside jokes, and more personalization to each card.

Image result for diy holiday card

6. Stick to trusted websites - If you have never used a certain website, it might be best to not buy a holiday gift on it. Use the sites you have used before and know get your gift to you on time! :)

Storytime: Disappearing Spider Attack?!

Hey cupcakes! Today I am coming at you all with another hilarious storytime post (read my last storytime post here)! It seems like I always have interesting stories to share with you all, so let me know if you want me to continue writing posts like this! Let's get started...

Alright, so this story takes place after a long day of class and work (lol - basically all of my stories start like this). I made it back to my dorm and decided to call my mom since I hadn't talked to her for awhile. I was talking to her on the phone while putting away my backpack and when I turned around, I saw a HUGE spider on the wall above my bed.

Image result for fake huge spider

Now I'm usually not scared of spiders, but there was something about this one.... Its body was very large, which grossed me out because it would crunch when I killed it.

Image result for nasty gif

I was like, "Mom, I will call you back. There's an urgent spider situation." I got a paper towel from my cupboard, went to kill it, AND IT FREAKING WENT BEHIND THE MOLDING OF MY CEILING.

Image result for burn it gif

I was horrified (because this spider was honestly the largest I've ever seen). I RAN to get the vacuum on my floor....

Image result for grab no shoes or nothing gif

And started to try to suck the spider from the molding. However, I couldn't tell if I got it or not (because I couldn't see the top of my ceiling). Basically, that huge spider could still be my roommate.

How To Style: Anniversary Date Night

Hey cupcakes! Today is my boyfriend and I's four year anniversary! :D <3 He is visiting me at college for a few days, so I thought it would be fun to make a lookbook inspired by an anniversary date night. Enjoy!

Outfit 1 - To remind your partner how awesome (and hot) you are, rock a gorgeous bodycon dress! To go with the rocker vibe of this dress, I paired it with a leather jacket and some heels.

Outfit 2 - I originally had this cute baby pink skirt that I wanted to pair with a sweater, but then I found this sweater dress and fell in love! It is so cute and the subtle pink still fits the anniversary/love theme. Pair it with some ankle boots and some dainty jewelry - perfect!

Outfit 3 - For a traditional date night look, rock a Little Black Dress! Any cardigan or kimono would look great, and I love these flats to complete the look. :)

My Current Favorite Accessories to Stay Warm

Hey cupcakes! "Weather" we like it or not, the cold is here to stay (lol - did you like what I did there?). It has been freezing here, so I have had to bust out all of my hats, gloves, scarves, etc. in order to not freeze as I walk to class. I wanted to share my favorite accessories with you all, so let's get started!

1. Dinosaur Hat - Rue21

Image result for rue 21 dinosaur hat

I bought this hat last year after Christmas (it was on sale for $1!), and I love it. You can't get it anymore obviously, but I would recommend buying a really cute hat like this to stay warm.

2. Blanket Scarf - Charlotte Russe

Striped Woven Blanket Scarf

Blanket scarves are all the rage right now, and I have been loving mine! They are so huge and cozy, which allows you to ties them so many different ways. I think it is an essential for the winter!

3. Text Gloves - Amazon

iGotTech Texting Gloves for Smartphones and Touchscreens, Black With Gray Details

If you are a college student, I think it is a must to have gloves that allow you to text and use your smartphone. Whether you have to check your email as you walk to class or message in GroupMe about an upcoming group project, these gloves are awesome! Plus, they keep your hands super warm!

4. Cute Minnie Hat - Hot Topic

Cute hats are a must in the cold weather, and Hot Topic always has such cute ones! From Harry Potter to Disney to basically any fandom, they have a lot of cute (and cheap) designs!

5. Flip Gloves - Target

Because you can never have enough gloves in the cold weather, I also suggest getting a pair of finger-less flip gloves! These are super cute mittens and are perfect if you will need to use your hands outside. :)

Best Songs for the Fall/Winter Transition

Hey cupcakes! I haven't done a music post in quite some time, so I thought it would be fun to make a list of all my current favorite songs. These songs have been perfect for the fall into winter transition, so I hope you take a listen! :)

1. "Flicker" by Niall Horan

Niall has always been my favorite One Direction member, so I was actually super excited to listen to his new album. I think it so good! "Flicker" is one of my favs, so I would definitely listen to it!

2. "Love is Like a Match" by Imogen Brough

I came across this song when listening to the soundtrack for the Dance Academy movie (lol), and I think it is a great cold weather song! For some reason it reminds me sitting by the fireplace when it is snowing outside, which gives it such a cozy vibe.

3. "Out Loud" by Gabbie Hanna

This song doesn't really have to do with the seasonal transition, but Gabbie from The Gabbie Show on YouTube actually came out with a great song!

4. "Havana" by Camila Cabello and Young Thug

This song is quite a jam! It has a really good catchy track in the back, so it has been a go-to song for me if I need motivation :P

5. "Paper Houses" by Niall Horan

Lol - another Niall song (I told you his album was good)! This song reminds me of a winter day for some reason, and it has such a beautiful melody. Definitely check it out!

Review: Paperless Post!

Hey cupcakes! I am such a big fan of writing my friends and family letters when I am at school, and as many of you know I have always enjoyed any type of art/craft project. In cooperation with Anagram Interactive, I wanted to review Paperless Post for you all!

Image result for paperless post

What is Paperless Post you ask? It is a website that allows you to send virtual cards that are totally customizable (and cheap!) to as many people as you'd like. The website includes so many different types of cards and invitations, from birthday to holiday to wedding! To send the cards, you have to purchase "coins", with a starting package of 20 coins for only $6 (or $0.30 per coin). This base price gets cheaper as you purchase the larger packages of coins!

While there are some free cards on the website, I wanted to walk through my experience customizing both a 1 coin and 2 coin card. Let's get started!

1 Coin: Holiday Card (check out the other holiday cards here!)

Front of card
Back of card

The card customization works by first picking out the cover of the card. Then, you can add different features for extra coins. Because I wanted to keep the price of this one lower, I added a gold backdrop (1 coin), pineapple envelope liner (1 coin), and green envelope (1 coin) for a card total of 4 coins (which is $1.20). I think this card turned out super cute!!!! When you send the card, it automatically send it in an email to your recipient(s). The recipient can them open it, which sends you to a video of the card being opened - it is super cute!

What it looks like when you first get the email!

2 Coin Card: Birthday Card (check out the other birthday cards here!)

For this card, I added a confetti backdrop (1 coin), polka dot envelope liner (1 coin), tan envelope (1 coin), and birthday cake stamp (1 coin) for a total of 6 coins (or $1.80). One of the things I absolutely love about the website is its hilarious pop culture references in the sample text (I kept the text the same in this card to show you all!). From the ones I saw, they had references to Harry Potter, Great Gatsby, etc. What a great touch!
Look at this cute design!!!!!!!

Overall Thoughts
I think this website is super cool! I cannot tell you how much fun it was to customize my cards, because there are just so many options! You can customize literally everything on the card (text size, font, color, etc.), and you can even add your own pictures. Plus, there are plently of amazing card designs to choose from, so you will definitely be able to find the perfect card for everyone. I think the idea of sending virtual cards is great because it reduces the amount of paper used, allows the recipient to keep the card forever on the computer, and is cheaper than most cards at any store (and you can customize it!!). Paperless Post also saves each card you send, so you can send the same card again or edit it for a new recipient. I definitely think doing invitations/holiday cards on this website would be fantastic, as all you have to do is put in emails and the cards will all be sent at once (you won't have to lick any nasty envelopes!). If you are looking for a great card website, I would recommend trying out Paperless Post! :)
