Blogmas Day 31 - What 2017 Has Taught Me

Hey cupcakes! 2017 was quite the crazy year! As always, it had ups and downs... But it was still a great year! :) Like I have done at the end of every year, I wanted to write a reflection post on what I learned throughout 2017. Let's get started!

Image result for 2018

1. Stress and anxiety can be managed with hard work - This semester was really tought, and I had lots of anxiety. However, I learned that my anxiety doesn't define me. It can be managed! I have been sharing my anxiety journey each month, so keep an eye out for those! :)

2. Focusing on you is SO important - This year I learned that taking time for myself is so crucial for keeping my mind working at its normal capacity. I even decided to take a stress managment class next semester to learn how to take care of myself better, which will allow me to better my life.

3. Confidence is crucial - My confidence has faltered a bit throughout this year, but I am working on building it back up as it is really important to be confident in who you are as an individual!!!!

4. Telling people that you love them is a must! - Even though you think people know that you love them, TELL THEM! <3

5. There is still happiness in a "cruel world" - Everything you see on the media/news is normally depressing, so this year I made it a point to think about the good things people are doing. It has honestly changed my mindset to be more positive, which is amazing!

6. Onesies are great - I LOVE THEM!

7. Finding out who your true friends are is SO important - This year I've learned that some of my close friends from last year weren't really all that close. However, I've strengthened my friendships with my true best friends, and I cannot be happier. True friends are essential to a happy life. <3

8. I actually feel like a grown up now - This year, I landed a summer internship in a city a couple of hours away from home, and I feel like I will actually succeed living by myself in my own apartment. I am starting to feel like an adult now (and am confident in myself that I can survive on my own), and I am so so excited to see where the future takes me!

9. Long distance relationships get harder over time - Over time, LDRs get harder because you start planning your future together, which makes it so much more real that you aren't together most of the time. However, my relationship is growing stronger because of our LDR, so I look forward to seeing what 2018 has in store for us.

10. I still love blogging - I was so stressed and busy this year, that I had doubts on if I should continue to blog on The Chic Cupcake. I realized that I love to blog, so I forced myself to post every day this Decemeber (and am proud to say I DID IT!!). Even though I don't see myself blogging for the rest of my life, I will definitely continue for the next couple of years.

What did you learn in 2017? Comment below and don't forget to follow The Chic Cupcake to never miss a post! :D

Blogmas Day 30 - New Year's Resolution Ideas!

Hey cupcakes! The start of 2018 is almost here, which means it is a good time to start thinking about what your New Year's Resolution should be.... To make this a little easier (as I always seem to have trouble coming up with a good one), I created a list for you all for a little inspiration! :)

Image result for new year's 2018

1. Limited time on social media - I, like most people, spend a little too much time on social media. I think an excellent resolution is to limit your time so you can spend more time with family and friends.

2. Eating balanced meals - I know a lot of people say they will "eat healthier" as their resolution, but try to make it more specific like "I will eat a vegetable with each meal". This will allow you to actually stick with it!

3. Find a new hobby - If your life seems to be boring, try finding a new hobby in the new year! :) Who knows, you might fall in love with this new activity!!!

4. Spend less - Instead of eating out or buying that new sweater you don't really need, try to save up for a vacation or larger item. This will allow you to stop spending on the little things.

5. Read more - This is especially relevant to my life; with school work, I barely have time to do some light reading, but I think it is super important to make time for it! Reading really improves your memory, brain functions, etc. so reading is a must!

6. Strive to be a better "you" - Whether this means hitting the gym more, meditating, cutting out toxic people in your life, starting a journal, etc. spend the new year focusing on improving YOU! You all are amazing people, so take time to work on improving your quality of life. <3

Blogmas Day 27 - Recipes: Hot Cocoa Mix-Ins

Hey cupcakes! I have been drinking a lot of hot chocolate lately (oops!), so I wanted to share with you all my favorite ways to spice up your typical glass of cocoa :) Let's get started!

1. Peppermint - I feel like everyone knows to put peppermint into hot cocoa, but I just had to include it! I suggest buying small candy canes that you can drap over the rim of your mug. The hot liquid will melt it slowly and adds such a great peppermint flavor!

Image result for candy cane in hot chocolate

2. Caramel syrup - Drizzle in some caramel syrup (that is usually sold in the ice cream topping aisle!). This adds even more sugar, but it tastes super good!

Image result for caramel syrup

3. Butterscotch syrup - For a more buttery flavor, you can also drizzle in some butterscotch syrup - YUM!

Image result for butterscotch syrup

4. Homemade marshmallows - If you have time on your hand, make a batch of homemade marshmallows! These taste better than the ones you buy in the store, so I totally recommend. :)

Blogmas Day 26 - Tips & Tricks for Shopping After the Holidays

Hey cupcakes! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday yesterday! :) Because I know many people tend to go shopping after the holidays, I wanted to make a list of my 5 best tips and tricks for nailing shopping after Christmas. Let's get started!

1. Make a list of what stores to hit first - Especially if you have returns, making a path through your mall or shopping center allows you to maximize your time.

Image result for list

2. Set a time frame - I suggest hitting the mall in the morning to avoid the afternoon rush (plus there will be more items in the stores!).

3. Go shopping with family or friends - Don't let each other spend money on things you don't actually need :P

Image result for shopping

4. Don't be afraid to hit the clearance - If you return a gift and have some store credit, I totally suggest looking through the clearance before the regular items. This allows you to get more for your money!

5. Buy Christmas decor for next year! - Everything will be on clearance, so if you were looking at something and didn't buy it during the holiday season, buy it now! :D

Blogmas Day 24 - Storytime: Scared of Santa?!?

Hey cupcakes! Merry Christmas Eve! :D In honor of Santa's big trip around the world tonight, I am going to share a hilarious storytime with you all today about my fear of Santa as a child. ;) Get ready for lots of laughs!

So, growing up I always loved the holiday season. I thought snow was awesome (I built some pretty great forts), decorating the tree was super fun, and (of course!) Christmas cookies were the best! However, I was always a bit nervous as Christmas Eve drew closer and closer....

Image result for nervous gif
Why, you ask?
...
Because I hated the idea of Santa coming into my room as I was asleep (which is a valid fear to be honest so good job to me for seeing that!). Even though my bedroom was on the second floor and our tree was downstairs, I still was unsure if Santa would somehow "have an adventure" upstairs. So I made sure to tell him:

Image result for writing gif
Dear Santa (I wrote in my letter to him on Christmas Eve),
How are you? I have been a very good girl this year. I hope you enjoy our cookies!
Love,
Jenna
P.S. Please DO NOT COME IN MY ROOM. (And I find this hilarious because my parents kept every letter I wrote to Santa and there are like six of them from different years that tell him to stay out :P)

After leaving my letter with the cookies, I lay in bed for an hour or so thinking about the next morning before falling asleep.

Image result for sleeping gif

The next morning was pretty uneventful. I woke up, opened presents with my family, and thought that Christmas was coming to a close. BUT, as I was playing with my new toys, my mom asked me what was under my bed.

Image result for um what gif

It was a bright yellow plastic sled. WHICH MEANS SANTA CAME INTO MY ROOM AND LEFT IT THERE.

Image result for nope nope gif
(But really my mom had forgotten to wrap it, so she thought it was a good idea to put it there)

Lol - so there's my story! After that incident I made sure to leave a sign hanging on my room to let Santa know he was unwelcomed to trespass :P

Blogmas Day 23 - Winter Date Ideas!

Hey cupcakes! Merry Christmas Eve Eve! :) I think the wintertime is a wonderful season for fun dates... So, I wanted to share my suggestions with you all today! You and your significant other are going to have a holiday season like no other <3

1. Zoo trip - Many zoos are still open in the winter, and they have discounted rates to get in! Plus, there are way less people, which allows you and your significant other to bundle up and have a blast! Some zoos also decorate with Christmas lights, which is also super fun to see!

Image result for winter zoo
Some animals are also more active in the winter!
2. Christmas Lights tour - Some people get SO into decorating for Christmas, so grab some cookies and hot cocoa, jump in the car, and drive around to find the most decorated house in your city. :P

Image result for christmas lights

3. Baking time! - Spend some quality time in the kitchen baking cookies together (or building a gingerbread house). :) Perfect way to make some edible gifts for the neighbors or your friend.

4. Ugly Sweater party - Either host your own ugly sweater party or head to someone else's and match sweaters with your significant other :P

5. Movies and Chill - If you want a calm night in before the crazy holidays, cuddling with your partner and watch a whole bunch of holiday movies (check out my list of best holiday movies here!).

Blogmas Day 22 - How to Style: Christmas Mass

Hey cupcakes! Christmas Mass is always something my family loves to go to during the holidays, so I wanted to share a lookbook with you all with some outfit ideas to wear to your church celebration. Let's get started!

Outfit #1 - This outfit is probably my favorite of the three. All you need is a burgundy skirt, a neutral sweater, and some flats! Perfect for the holidays!

Outfit #2 - If you don't want to wear skirt or dress, I suggest wearing some black pants, flats, and a cute sweater (I personally love this sweater!).

Outfit #3 - My church can sometimes get warm with a lot of people in it, so if you want to stay cool I suggest wearing a dress! There are so many great dresses in stores over the holidays, so try to stick to some holiday colors (green, burgundry, red, etc.). :)

Blogmas Day 21 - Fun Things to do in the Snow!

Hey cupcakes! Playing in the snow is for children and adults alike, so I wanted to make a list of my favorite "snow" activities! :) Make sure you have a blast during the next snowfall!

1. Snowball fight - That's right; snowball fights are the best! Channel your inner kid with your family and friends to see who will win the war! To make it more fun, split into teams or play a "Hunger Games" version where the last person to get hit by a snowball wins!

Image result for elf snowball fight gif

2. Make a snow fort - If you have a lot of snowbanks where you live, I suggest turning a snowbank into a fort! I used to do this all the time as a kid, and it is super duper fun.

3. Make a message for above - Use your feet to make a huge message for those airplanes ;) Spell out "Hello" or "Happy Holidays" (and don't forget to add some snow angels as well!).

Image result for message in snow

4. Have sled races - If you have a good sledding hill where you live, have some sled races with family and friends!

5. Build a snow family - When the snow is packing snow, make sure to build a couple of snow people to create a beautiful snow family for the holidays! :)

Blogmas Day 20 - Gift Giving Guide: For Significant Other

Hey cupcakes! For the last post in my mini gift giving guide series, I wanted to focus on gifts you can get for your significant other. :) Let's get started!

1. DIY present - I personally love to buy a gift for my boyfriend and then make him a present too. This can be a book of the reasons you love them, Open When letters, etc. Use your imagination (and Pinterest!) to make a great gift!

Image result for 52 reasons why i love you

2. Socks - Lol, seems like a bad present but it is honestly a great gift! You can buy "normal" woolen socks to keep your feet warm in the winter or fun socks with animals on them ;)

3. Restaurant gift cards - My boyfriend got me a couple of gift cards to my favorite restaurants on campus last year, and it was such a cute gift! He knew I liked to eat at those places when I am stressed, so I thought it was really sweet of him to pay for some meals in advance. <3

4. Jewelry - Jewelry is always a great gift for Christmas! It doesn't have to be expensive, I personally love to look on Etsy to find some unique pieces that aren't that expensive.

5. Customized ornament - Especially if you live with your significant other, having a custom ornament made is such a great gift! Commemorate your first Christmas together with an ornament that will last forever.

Blogmas Day 19 - Christmas Traditions to Start This Year

Hey cupcakes! Christmas is almost here!!!! :D I'm so close to being done with finals, and I am so excited to go home to be with family. <3 My family has a lot of traditions during the holiday season, and I thought I would share with you all some of the traditions you could start with your family this year... Let's get started!

1. Christmas Eve pjs - I think it is such a cute idea to order matching pajamas to open on Christmas Eve! I know some friends who do this, and I think it would be super fun to cuddle with your family and watch holiday movies all night.

Image result for christmas eve kit

2. Caroling around the tree - My family has this tradition where we all hold hands and sing Christmas carols around the tree after we finish decorating it. It is so much fun and warms my heart, so I will definitely continue this tradition when I move out.

3. Donating - Every Christmas, my parents let my sisters and I pick a child from the angel tree at Walmart to purchase presents for. I think this is a great way to spread holiday cheer, so I recommend for everyone to start doing this!

4. Annual ornaments - Each year, my mom purchases me an ornament that reminds her of me, something that happened this year, etc. Because she has been doing this since I was 1, I now have a bunch of ornaments with such special memories attached that I will be able to take with me when I get my own apartment or house in the future. :) My favorite tradition by far!

Image result for ornament

5. Cookie making - I feel like a lot of families bake cookies during the holiday, so I would definitely find your family's traditional cookie recipe to make each year. Nothing says holiday more like baking with your family <3

Blogmas Day 18 - Recipe: Graham Cracker Gingerbread House!

Hey cupcakes! When I was younger, my parents would let my sisters and I build gingerbread houses... But, we didn't use a kit. Instead, we built our own from scratch using graham crackers!! :) This is still one of my fondest memories of the holidays growing up, so I wanted to share with you all how you can make your own graham cracker gingerbread house. <3

Image result for graham cracker gingerbread house

What You Need
-Lots of graham crackers
-Some sort of frosting (you can make your own, or use a can of Pillsbury frosting from the store!)
-Piping bag/knife for spreading frosting
-Paper plate
-CANDY (the more the better)
-Other things for decorations (sprinkles, candy canes, etc.)
-Powdered sugar (optional)

What To Do:
1. Place your paper plate on a flat surface to use as the "backdrop" for your house.
2. Break up the graham crackers to create the walls, roof, etc. of your house! This step is totally unique, as you can make your house look like whatever you want!
3. Place the frosting into the piping bag, and "glue" your walls, roof, etc. to the paper plate. Make sure to add enough so that it doesn't fall apart!

Image result for graham cracker gingerbread house

4. Continue to pipe frosting onto the house so that you can decorate with as much candy as possible!
5. When you are finished, sprinkle some powdered sugar "snow" over the scene to add an extra touch of the holidays.
6. Ta-da! Display your beautiful house for everyone to see :D

Blogmas Day 17 - How to Style: Exam Clothes

Hey cupcakes! Finals can be stressful, but I thought it would be nice to make a lookbook for outfits you can wear during your exams to make them a little more "fun". Let's get started!

Outfit #1 - If you want to wear the typical college exam taker outfit, throw on some comfy joggers, your favorite cozy sweatshirt, and some Uggs!

Outfit #2 - For those who want to be semi-comfy but also look a bit nicer, I suggest wearing some leggings and your favorite crew neck or long sleeve shirt.

Outfit #3 - If you want to use the mantra "Dress well, test well", this outfit is for you! All you need to do is wear your favorite jeans, a sweater (it could even be a Christmas sweater!), and some boots. Ta-da; you are going to nail your exam!

Blogmas Day 16 - Gift Giving Guide: For Siblings

Hey cupcakes! Here is the next post for my mini Gift Giving Guides series (read the last post here)! :D If you have siblings, here are some present ideas that are perfect for the holidays!

1. Box of Fav Foods

Image result for box of snacks

I find that my siblings love to receive a box of their favorite treats, snacks, and foods! This can be holiday themed (like hot chocolate, cookies, etc.) or just a collection of their favorite snacks. They will definitely love it!

2. Matching necklaces

Image result for matching necklaces sisters

If you have sisters, buy a set of matching necklaces so you can all wear them together! :) This is a great gift, and reminds you of your sibling if you don't live in the same place.

3. Mug and "Warm Beverages Kit"

Image result for mug sibling

To make the holidays special, make your sibling a festive "Warm Beverages Kit". This contains a mug/travel mug (can be customized if you want!), coffee/tea/hot chocolate, marshmallows, cute tea strainer, etc. Gives you both an excuse to chat by the fireplace together!

4. Favorite book/movie and a blanket

Image result for fuzzy blanket
My siblings all love to read, so I love picking out a special book for them and also a warm, fuzzy blanket! If your sibling isn't much of a reader, you can also buy them their favorite movie (or a movie they have always wanted to see).

Blogmas Day 15 - Tips & Tricks for Staying Healthy During Finals

Hey cupcakes! As I am writing this, I still have a bunch of finals to still take (can you believe that my last final in on the 21st!!!!!). Because I know finals can be stressful, I wanted to share my tips with you all for staying healthy during finals week(s) to ensure you are at your best during your tests!

1. Drink water - This is super basic, but I know so many people who don't actually drink water when they study. It is so important to keep your mind focused and your body healthy, so swap that coffee for some water! :)

Image result for water bottle

2. Plan out your study locations - I like to make a plan at the beginning of the week to decide when I will stay in the dorm or go to a library, coffeshop, etc. to study (take the weather into account when you do this!). Having a plan allows me to mentally prepare myself to be uber productive when I go out to study.

3. Take mental health breaks! - When you make your study location plan, also figure out when you can take mental breaks :) Make sure you have time to hang with friends (and exchange gifts) before you go off on winter break! Also include time to exercise, draw, or anything else that helps you de-stress.

Image result for exercise

4. Be smart with your time - You don't have to study 24/7 during finals week; just make to be really productive during the time you actually study!!!

5. Don't overstudy - I have a habit of overstudying, but it can honestly make you do worse on exams.

6. Remember that you can only do your best! - Don't focus on what other people are doing to study or what their grades are, just focus on YOU! Everyone succeeds in their own, and there will always be people who are naturally smarter than you. Just do your best!

Image result for you do you gif

7. If you don't do as well as you wanted on an exam, get over it quickly - Don't ruin your winter break because you didn't get an A on that Econ exam... You win some and you lose some, so it just wasn't meant to be. :) In the long run, GPA won't even be on your resume so just do as best as you can! Enjoy your break because you deserve it :D

Blogmas Day 14 - The WORST Christmas Carols

Hey cupcakes! I hope everyone is having an awesome day :D Today, I wanted to share with you all my least favorite Christmas Carols... Yup, that's right! I'm going to enlighten you all with the songs that I cannot stand during the holiday season. :P Let's get started!

Image result for charlie brown singing gif

1. "The Twelve Days of Christmas" - I feel like everyone hates this song... First of all, I can never remember the order of the "gifts" and secondly, the song itself lasts for literally YEARS! Definitely not my cup of tea.

2. "Carol of the Bells" - I won't like turn the radio off if this song starts to play, but it brings me back to my choir days in high school when we had to sing this... As a soprano, you literally never get to breathe, so it has bad memories for me haha.

3. "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" - WHY IS THIS A THING! It is so sad, and I find the actual words real annoying haha.

4. "My Favorite Things" - This song is fine, but it isn't a Christmas song (even though EVERYONE plays it during the holidays). Just because there are packages wrapped in string does not mean it's for Christmas...

5. "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" - I always was horrified by this song as a child, because why would the mom cheat on dad with Santa?! Creepyyyyyy.

Blogmas Day 13 - Finals Survival Playlist

Hey cupcakes! My finals start in only a few days, so I have been studying like a crazy person recently. I find it essential to have some great music as I study, so I wanted to make some recommendations to you all who may also be studying for finals. :D

1. "Weightless" by Marconi Union

This song supposedly gets rid of all your anxiety (saw it on Pinterest haha but I'm not sure if that's actually true), and it is pretty relaxing when I listen to it. I don't think it's as good as my other study songs, but it definitely is on my "Study Time" playlist.

2. "Music of the Spheres" (Spharkenlange; Op. 235) by Straus

I heard this song at a concert, and it is such a pretty piece of music! It sounds almost like a waltz, and isn't too long. Great for studying!

3. "The Princess Diaries Waltz" by John Debney

I have loved this piece ever since I watched The Princess Diaries when I was younger, and it is super relaxing to listen to while you study.

4. "This is Me" by Keala Settle

This song is from the new movie The Greatest Showman (which I want to see!!), and it is a great catchy tune that really empowers you.

5. "Tip Toe" by Jason Derulo and French Montana

This song is quite the bop, but it gets me excited for a long day of studying :)

Blogmas Day 12 - The Best and Worst Holiday Movies!

Hey cupcakes! There are so many great movies to watch during the holiday season, so I thought I would share my personal favs with you all today (and also add in a few I can't stand)! :D

Bests:
Home Alone

This movie is still hilarious even after I've seen it so many times, and it wouldn't be Christmas without watching at least once!

The Grinch

The original Grinch (the cartoon!) is always a great way to get in the holiday spirit. Plus, it isn't very long, so you can always squeeze it in! :)

Frosty the Snowman

Even though the kids are pretty mean to the poor child who suggests they name the snowman "Oatmeal" in the beginning, Frosty is definitely a classic I have always watched ever since I was a child. It has some catchy songs too :P

A Christmas Story

This movie is AMAZING! There are so many hilarious jokes in it, and my family always watches it on Christmas Day (as it is played on TV for 24 hours then!). If you haven't seen it, you better watch it this holiday season!!!!!!

Worsts:
Miracle on 34th Street

As a kid, I hated this movie because I thought it was horrifying that the guy leaves a cane in their house at the end. A little too creepy for me haha.

The Polar Express

I don't know if it is the animation or the storyline, but I never really like the Polar Express (the book is okay). I just don't see how it is supposed to be a "feel good Christmas movie".

Blogmas Day 11 - Gift Giving Guide: For Dad

Hey cupcakes! Get excited for the third post in my gift giving guide mini series! :D Today, I will be focusing on presents to give your father, as I always find it pretty difficult to find something my dad will actually like. :)

1. Tie - I feel like a tie is always a great gift for your dad. When I was little, my mom would always let me pick out a tie for him (and yes, they were usually hideous), so I think it still is a nice gift to keep the tradition alive.

2. Custom money clip/keychain - If you are looking for something more personal, a customized wallet insert, money clip, or keychain is a good gift. :) You can add any heartfelt message you want, which makes it a perfect present.

3. Funny apron - My dad loves to cook and grill, so getting him a funny apron is something I have done in the past (you can pair this with some grilling tools, etc.)!

4. Baseball hat - I feel like so many dads wear baseball hats haha, so get you father a hat for his alma mater or favorite sports team! :)

5. Audio book subscription - My dad used to have to commute to work, so I think an audio book subscription is a great gift (such as Audible)! Instead of having to just listen to the radio, listening to a book is so much more fun!

6. Snack attack - Everyone loves to eat, so treat your father to his favorite restaurant for a nice dinner, or make him a DIY package of all his favorite snacks. Tasty, delicious, and always a winner!

What will you be getting your dad for Christmas? Comment below and don't forget to follow The Chic Cupcake to never miss a post during Blogmas! :D
